ECOCODE
|
Here at Plas Gwynant we
have just gained our "Eco Centre" status. This has involved a number of
initiatives, including to ensure that our own practices are environmentally
sound, and also encouraging students to adopt good environmental practice both
at the centre and back at home. We foster awareness among students, staff and
visitors of the following statement:
Plas
Gwynant Outdoor Education Centre uses the outdoors for adventure and enjoyment.
We want to look after the environment, both locally and the wider global
environment to create a sustainable future. We can only do this by involving all
of our staff and our visitors.
We aim to:
Have a litter free centre, both indoors and outdoors in the grounds and on
activities. We pick up litter when we see it even if it isn’t ours. All
waste such as paper, cans, glass, batteries will be recycled and green waste
composted for use in the garden.
Reduce the amount of energy we use by turning off lights in our bedrooms,
public rooms and stores. We will monitor the amount of electricity we use to
see much we save.
Use local spring water for showering, washing, and toilets. We will also
reduce our water consumption by using rainwater for washing equipment and
not leaving taps running, when we clean our teeth or cleaning things.
Work to look after our beautiful, natural surroundings by leaving no trace
of us being there on our activities. We will clear invasive species and
encourage wildlife in the surrounding area by feeding the birds, providing
bird boxes and encouraging different habitats for other wildlife.
Provide fresh wholesome food from, where possible, locally sourced
ingredients. We will try and cut down on wasted food, and try to eat new and
healthy options.
Involve all our visitors in this sustainable development.
Share our ideas with everyone so that they can share them with
others.
We are also a provider of the John Muir Award - click on the logo for more information.
